Festivals on San Andres Islands
Festivals on San Andres Island celebrate its traditional products. They are a great way to learn about local culture and cuisine, as well as to enjoy a fantastic colorful show. Afro-caribbean music takes center stage as a tribute to the island’s black roots which descent from Africa and some parts of the Caribbean.
Some of the biggest festivals are:
Caribbean Evenings
The North End Fundación Casa de la Cultura (Cultural Center Foundation) hosts “Caribbean Evenings” every two weeks at the Salón del Mar. Traditional dancing, demonstrations of San Andres Island traditional instruments, musical performances and island cuisine are some of main attractions to see during these evenings.
Bill & Mary Festival
During the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday of October each year, a music festival takes place in honor of Bill and Mary. Fans can perform in this festival!
Sea Week
Each year, Sea Week takes place during the same week as Colombia’s national holiday, July 20. The city is decorated, symbols of the sea start to appear in numerous spots on the island, and the national military band takes over the island with its music.
Crab Festival
The Crab Festival is one of San Andres Island’s typical celebrations. For this festival, islanders prepare a variety of crab-based dishes including caramañolas, rice with crab, crab cakes and crab appetizers. And as with any festival on San Andres, there is lots of traditional music and dance!
